Event description
Develop your photography skills with Alison Pouliot, in this full-day environmental photography workshop hosted by Axe Creek Landcare.

About this event

Alison Pouliot is an ecologist, environmental photographer, natural historian and devout fungi forager. Her passion for capturing the beauty of the “peculiar and the familiar” has led Alison on a life of adventure teaching and researching in hidden parts of the world.

Alison brings her immense experience to deliver an intimate photography workshop in Axe Creek. In this workshop Alison will inspire you to improve the impact and interpretative power of your images. She will encourage you to explore the visual tensions between aesthetics, ecology and conservation.

Workshop Details:

Visualising the Environment – A Reflective Lens on Environmental Photography

Photographic images shape perceptions and the ways in which we understand the environment.

This highly interactive workshop explores a wide range of environmental themes through an illustrated seminar, active discussion, image critique, demonstration of techniques and a practical field trip. It goes beyond the literal representations of 'nature photography' to address the thought processes behind creating compelling and meaningful images and visual stories.

The workshop assists participants to improve the impact and interpretative power of their images. In particular, it explores the visual tensions between aesthetics, ecology and conservation.

What makes some images convincing and others banal?

How can we visualise environmental issues such as climate change that are often abstract and insidious?

These questions and more will be actively explored in the context of participants own interests in environmental photography and the environment more generally.

The workshop is suitable for people with all levels of environmental knowledge and photographic skill, although participants would be expected to know how to operate their cameras.

Participant Requirements:

Participants require their own cameras and to bring additional batteries or battery charger. For the critique session, they will be required to submit two images in advance of the workshop (further details will be forwarded). Participants are asked to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear for the field trip, which will go ahead regardless of weather.

Covid Contingency:

Should Covid restrictions prevent the workshop from going ahead in-situ, a comprehensive online workshop has been developed and will be offered to all participants.

Our Supporters:

The Axe Creek Landcare Love Your Land event series is supported by the Victorian Government.
