This course is designed for teachers implementing the Textiles and Design, Textile Technology, Design and Technology syllabi and is facilitated by experienced Textiles and Design teacher/s.
The Course will deliver detailed information and provide a hands on skills workshop to give participants a deep understanding of felting – using a textile fibre, and fabric manufacturing process.
In the first session teachers will be introduced to felting - an environmentally friendly fabric manufacturing methods using wool, a naturally biodegradable fibre - its history, types of equipment and materials required.
In the following session a skills demonstration will be followed by the hands on making of 2D and 3D unique, non-fraying and durable felt. Tips for successful felting in the classroom and discussions about teaching strategies will enable participants to further develop these activities for their classes.
The final session will enable teachers to create felt embellishments, eg felt balls, dreadlocks, flowers, coils, and to discover the various applications for these techniques. There will also be a discussion related to felting and its application to student projects supported by illustrations and examples of possible designs.
The structure of the workshop provides the opportunity for teachers to enhance networking by working collaboratively with teachers to broaden their content knowledge, and be provided opportunities to take back new or different skills to improve their teaching practice.
