Calling all expectant mums, birthing parents and your support people! Come join us to learn the essentials of Active Birth Skills!

Are you pregnant or supporting someone who is?

Whether you are planning to birth in a hospital or at home, this workshop is for you.

Whether you are a first time, second or fifth time mum, this workshop is for you.

This workshop centers on the woman and birthing parent AND involves the support person if you have one attending. You will learn active birth skills, and how they can help make your labour more comfortable, understand your body and increase confidence to birth your baby.

Every pregnancy, labour and birth is different, so even if you're not a first time parent this workshop will give you ideas and tools on how to make positive changes to your experience.

Active birth has proven links to labours which are shorter, less painful and decrease the need for intervention. Rather than lying down during labour, active birth encourages movement and use gravity to assist with the birth of their baby. There isn't one right way to birth actively, it's all about what feels right for you, as the most imporant person in birth and your partner.

This workshop will be led by Fiona Reid, a midwife with over 30 years experience and supported by Helen Donovan, a midwife and lactation consultant with over a decades experience.

In this workshop we explore:

• Benefits of active birth including the physiology of birth

• Active birth positions which can help during labour

• How to use props during labour such as birth balls, mats, birthing stool and slings

• Making the most of your birth environment (at hospital or home) during active birth

• How partners or support people can help during active birth inclding assiting with positions, emotional support and advocacy.

• Informed Consent - How to make informed choices and communicate them to your care provider

• 45 minute break to go enjoy lunch at local cafes and light afternoon tea will be provided.

What to Bring?

• Yoga mat

• Fitball (if you do not have one, we will have spare ones)

• Notebook or journal to write notes.

Frequently asked questions

How many weeks pregnant should I be to get the most out of this course?

It is entirely up to you, however, we recommend from around 30 weeks onwards. The information will be more relevant and useful for you and you and your partner (if you have one) will have greeater levels of retention of the ideas, tools and examples shared.

Is this course still relevant if I'm birthing at hospital? Or at home?

Yes! The skills and tools are relevant to wherever you choose to birth. You will be introduced to a range of birth props that are found in most hospitals and some you can source for home.

Will food and drinks be provided? Do I need to bring lunch?

Tea, coffee, water, juice and a simple assortment of biscuits and fruit for afternoon tea will be provided. There is a 45 minute lunchbreak at 12.30pm where you can bring your own lunch or have lunch at one of the cafes right near the venue.

Absolutely! If you do not have a support person/partner or they are unable to attend you are most welcome to come solo. We will ensure when we are working through different techniques for active birth that you are supported in positions to get the most out of the course.
