Event Information
About this Event
Humane Clinic and Community Health Onkaparinga (CHO) invite you to join us for a screening of the new film Medicating Normal on December 6, 2020. The event will run from 5pm to 8pm and all proceeds will go towards the Just Listening Community project. There will be a coffee cart on site, please bring your own food or snacks.
Filmgoers will also receive an introduction to the Just Listening Community, the first volunteer-led community emergency department alternative to support people experiencing emotional or suicidal distress. The first Just Listening Community site and training hub will open in Christie’s Beach in the first half of 2021, offering a space and resources to allow our community to be in connection and support of one another. There will be a Just Listening stand available at the screening offering justice in listening to all attendees. See www.justlistening.com.au for more information.
The event will also include the launch of Suicide Narratives, a new multifaceted approach from the Humane Clinic addressing how we may better understand and respond to suicidal distress, based in hearing a person's story and offering healing through human connection.
Medicating Normal is a documentary film exploring the conventional mental health care system's reliance on psychiatric drugs to deal with trauma, grief, and distress. The film documents the journeys of five individuals profoundly impacted by the medications they were taking. Interviews with these individuals, psychiatrists and medical experts reveal the current mental health profession’s drug-centered approach to treatment and the crises this created.
"Medicating Normal dares to challenge prevailing myths about how psychotropic medications work, or fail to, in our ongoing struggle to treat mental illness. It promises to spark a long-overdue national conversation on the growing problem of overprescribing.” - Anna Lembke M.D., psychiatrist, faculty Stanford University Medical School.
We hope to see you there! Please feel free to share this invitation with your friends, family, colleagues, and social networks.
