Experiential Inner Relationship Focusing and Emotion Focused Therapy is a 2 day workshop

About this Event

What is Experiential Inner Relationship Focusing?

Experiential Focusing is located as one of the ‘tribes of the person-centred nation’ and its purpose is to help clients/focusers to deeply access their inner, but out of awareness experience. The Focusing process was developed as a response to research into effective therapy which demonstrated that a key feature in successful therapy was client in-session inner experiential processing. In fact, Eugene Gendlin (1996), examining the video tapes of Carl Rogers’ therapeutic work discovered that effectiveness of Psychotherapy correlated with the client's capacity to access what Gendlin called a ‘Felt Sense’ in the central part of their body. Experiential Focusing is one of the few ways of facilitating client inner experiential processing, especially for clients who do not automatically turn inward to sense directly what they are experiencing. Experiential Inner Relationship Focusing then, is an important therapeutic task within the model of Emotion Focused Therapy.

Gendlin demonstrated how bringing attention to the ‘Felt Sense’ through the process of Focusing brings about fresh symbolization of meaning that can establish a new sense of well-being and the transformation of the self. More recently Ann Weiser- Cornell has added a dimension to Focusing which she has called ‘inner relationship’ focusing. By being able to access the ‘felt sense’ and develop a compassionate inner relationship with it and with the parts of self, clients experience a forward shift in their disposition and a freeing up of emotional blocks (Cornell, 2013).

Workshop Overview

In the workshop, participants will directly apply the Focusing process. Role-plays in pairs are structured to ensure that those in the role of Focuser/client experience the bodily ‘felt sense’ and the process steps that facilitate the emergence of new experiences. The workshop will cover the Focusing attitude and participants will learn to apply steps in the advanced listening responses of Experiential Focusing. Additionally, emphasis will be on facilitating a compassionate inner relationship with ‘felt-experience’.

The concept of ‘felt sense’ is explained and explored to enhance participants’ understanding of unconscious and body referential processes in the relationship between ‘focuser’ and guide/counsellor. Emphasis is placed on the pre-verbal/subtle aspect of the ‘felt sense’ and how it differs from emotion and thought.

By observing a taped ‘Focusing’ session, participants will review the experiential process steps and examine how counsellors in therapeutic settings may use ‘therapeutic presence’ and ‘experiential listening responses’ effectively.

In order that participants can incorporate experiential inner relationship Focusing into their counselling practice, practical sessions will be targeted to developing the skills associated with the six steps in Focusing as proposed by Gendlin and elaborated further by Ann Weiser Cornell (1996), Laury Rappaport (2009), and Emotion Focused Therapy developers Elliott, Watson, Goldman and Greenberg (2004).

Laury Rappaport’s ‘Focusing Oriented Art Therapy’ processes will be covered as participants will practice facilitating a focusing session using visual art.

Participants will be led through the process and sessions will be observed and feedback will be given to enhance practice.
