Faculty of Science, University of Newcastle

The Faculty of Science is a world-class centre for scientific research and innovation. Through our strong discipline-based research and active inter-disciplinary engagement, both nationally and internationally, we are at the forefront of research and development in a broad range of fields.

In the latest Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) results The University of Newcastle was one of three universities to achieve a rating of '5' in Biochemistry and Cognitive sciences – this is the first time any University has been awarded the top rating of '5' in Cognitive Sciences.

In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017, across the 17 codes assessed that could be considered core for the Faculty, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences and Human Geography – the faculty recorded eight "5" ratings, improving the rating in eight codes and maintaining the rating in another six codes.

The Faculty subject area of cognitive science is ranked in the top 3 in Australia. In world rankings our subject area of geography and  psychology are in the top 150, with environmental science in the top 200, mathematics and biological science in the top 250 and chemistry in the top 350*.

Our research strengths lie in the key areas of industry and infrastructure, sustainability and the environment, as well as health and well-being.
