Event description

Description

For many young people, sitting down and having ‘the Talk’ is often less than uncomfortable – the awkward explanation of reproduction and love usually wrapped up in a heterosexual bundle and dropped in our laps. If it isn’t done at home, it is done in the classroom as the health teacher awkwardly plays a video 10 years too old showing a cartoon sperm wearing a top hat. As we get older, we look back and laugh at how bad it all was.

For many people with disabilities, though, this knowledge, even in this awkward bundle, doesn’t exist. Social stigmas and attitudes around disabilities has still not developed to recognise the need for decent sex education. Leaving people with disabilities often unable to explore healthy sexual relationships due to a lack of knowledge, support, and/or privacy.

As such, this unique workshop explores how relevant and necessary it is to be inclusive of people with disabilities – particularly young people – when it comes to sex education, and accept as the norm that people with disabilities are sexual beings too.

Facilitated by YDAN members Tayla Tasseff & Vanessa Vlajkovic (2016 YACWA WA Young Person of the Year).
