Ballarat Community Health are proud to host Sexual Health Victoria to provide Young People's Sexual Health (Professional Development for Youth Workers)
Professionals that support young people aged 12-25 who are at-risk, or outside of mainstream secondary school settings. This may include, residential care workers; alternative education staff; youth homelessness or AOD support workers; local council youth group coordinators.
Course Overview
Evidence demonstrates that Youth and Community workers play a pivotal role in supporting young people’s sexual health and improving their health outcomes. We want to support the sector to enable staff to have the knowledge and confidence to start conversations with the young people they work with about their reproductive and sexual health.
This course is designed for youth and community workers, working with young people aged 12-25, who are at-risk or outside of a mainstream secondary school setting. The course is either delivered online or face-to-face. This is a great opportunity to network and meet other people from across the sector.
This course is delivered by experienced community educators who work with young people in educational settings.
Course Content
- Understanding young people’s sexual health through a sex-positive approach
- Prevention of sexually transmissible infections (STIs) and blood borne viruses (BBVs)
- How to combat STI and BBV stigma
- How to support youth to access sexual health services
- Contraceptive options
- Understanding medical abortion
- Creating a trauma-informed space to discuss sexual health
- Exploring legal and ethical consent, including affirmative consent legislation
- How to support the sexual health needs of LGBTQIA+ youth
Learning Intentions
Following completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Have an increased knowledge of sexual health
- Understand and model a sex-positive approach
- Identify ways to support and facilitate conversations with youth about their sexual health
- Gain knowledge on where young people can seek sexual health care
- Feel confident to advocate for young people to ensure they have access to safe inclusive care
