Familiarity with plot types can help you organise your thinking in beginning your own narratives, but as to how many basic plots there are in Western literature, is open to debate: one, two, three, seven, forty?
Using Christopher Booker’s fascinating book, The Seven Basic Plots, as a guide, we can explore those narrative structures and how they’ve been used for thousands of years of story making, as a way to launch into the creation of new original works.
