About this event

Writing Speculative Fiction. Focused on idea generation, how to expand on those ideas to form a full story, and avoiding common pitfalls of the genre

Date: Saturday June 15

Time: 1- 4pm

About the workshop:

Explore the boundless possibilities and power of speculative fiction to tell realistic stories in ‘unrealistic’ worlds.

Whether you’ve always written speculative fiction or you’re just trying it out for the first time, this workshop looks at the variety of speculative fiction sub-genres, examines the use and power of tropes, and how to address common issues around exposition and world-building all while learning methods for generating new ideas.

About Jess:

Jess Gately is a freelance editor and publishing professional with a particular interest in speculative fiction. She is the President of Editors WA, sits on the board for Night Parrot Press, and has been a judge for the Aurealis Awards since 2019. Jess is a casual academic at Curtin University in the Professional Writing and Publishing major, and her Masters project looked at the editorial approach to fictional languages in sci-fi and fantasy. Jess is passionate about the power of language and stories to connect people and change the world.
