Writers Workshop – Gold Coast | The Art and Craft of Storytelling with Mick

Join acclaimed director, writer, and actor Mick Thyer for an in-depth exploration into the art and craft of storytelling.
Originally from Australia and an alumni of The University of Queensland and Brown University’s graduate writing program, Mick has spent the past 15 years teaching in Los Angeles and Cape Cod while working across theatre and independent film on both coasts of the United States.
This 8-week workshop focuses on method-based exercises and the core fundamentals of storytelling. Through guided discussion and practical application, students will learn how to:
• Structure compelling stories
• Develop strong inciting incidents and story beats
• Create dynamic, layered characters
• Build dramatic tension
• Challenge and deepen their understanding of narrative
Participants will examine classic and contemporary works including American Beauty, The Social Network, Juno, TV pilots such as Mad Men and Breaking Bad, as well as memoirs like The Liars’ Club and Wild, alongside selected personal essays.
Students will apply specific techniques directly to their own projects in a supportive group environment that encourages discussion, risk-taking, and creative growth.
The workshop concludes with a public presentation of selected works from the class.
