EVENT: Queensland Day: Celebrating Queensland Women in Design
WORKSHOP: Expressive Embroidery with Karina Seljak

This workshop will equip you with a practical and expressive embroidery technique to repair rips, holes, or stains on your favourite garments. Bring in an item you love, and learn how to use scrap fabric and colourful yarn to create a patch that not only fixes your clothes but creates a feature that is unique to you. Repair saves you money, empowers you to restore the things you love, and helps release pressure on the planet from overconsumption. Repairing your stuff with others can be easy, fun, connecting and meditative – and in this case, really beautiful.

This is a free event but spaces are limited!
Two sittings are available 11am-12pm and 12pm-1pm.

What to bring:

  • Optional - An item of clothing you’d like to embellish using the visible mending technique OR
  • OPTIONAL - A garment in need of repair. The best garments would be jackets, jeans, or items like a blanket or pillowcase. Technique works best with woven not knitted materials, ie. not stretchy, like denims and cotton drills etc.
  • Non-stretch/woven patch of fabric, if preferred (otherwise supplied)

About the facilitator:

Karina Seljak is an artist and designer, and Co-founder & Creative Director at Seljak Brand. Seljak Brand designs closed-loop blankets from textiles waste, which are also recyclable at their end of their useful life. Over the course of 9 years, Karina and her sister have investigated the potential and realities of Circular Economy approaches to manufacturing and consumption in Australia. Karina's current creative practice includes drawing with soft pastels to investigate the sentience of local landscapes and natural phenomena. These artworks are echoed in blanket designs, as well as the free-form embroidery technique she uses to repair textiles.
