Women Holding Things - An International Women's Day Gathering
Local artists Linda Brescia and Hayley Megan French invite women to join them in reflecting on what they carry—both seen and unseen
In celebration of International Women’s Day, local artists Linda Brescia and Hayley Megan French are leading a participatory workshop, inviting women to reflect on what they carry—both seen and unseen. Inspired by Maira Kalman’s Women Holding Things, participants are asked to bring an object that represents something they hold in their lives: a responsibility, a memory, a role, a dream, a burden, or a source of strength.
Each participant will be photographed holding her object with a Polaroid camera, creating an immediate portrait. We will share food, stories and the meaning behind these objects, opening a conversation about care, labour, resilience, identity, and the emotional and cultural weight women carry across generations and geographies.
About the Artists
Linda Brescia is a Western Sydney-based artist who investigates the banalities and complexities of everyday life experiences and rituals through painting, photography, sculpture and performance. Her practice explores dynamics around visibility and invisibility, masking, care and self-assertion.
Hayley Megan French works with photography, painting and writing to locate herself in places and ideas of home, suburbia and landscape. She lives on Dharug land in Western Sydney and believes it is important to engage with the places we live with a renewed wonder and critical attention to better understand who we are and how we live.
Limited parking available onsite, street parking available on Oxford Street.
