Western Sydney Youth Cancer Service Caregivers Awareness Night
Western Sydney Youth Cancer Services is hosting a Caregivers Night in recognition of Adolescent and Young Adults Cancer Awareness Month!
Western Sydney Youth Cancer Services warmly invites you to our Caregivers Night in honour of AYA Cancer Awareness Month, a special evening dedicated to those who support young people through one of life’s toughest challenges. AYA cancer impacts the whole family, and this event creates a welcoming space for caregivers to connect, learn, and feel supported.
You’ll hear from healthcare professionals, psychosocial clinicians, and lived‑experience speakers who will share practical insights and real stories from the AYA cancer journey. Community organisations will also be onsite with resources and guidance to help you navigate the support systems available. Whether your young person is on treatment or adjusting to life after treatment, this night is designed to empower, inform, and remind you that you’re not alone.
There will be the option to attend one of two sessions:
Session 1: On Treatment
Navigating Life in the Middle of it All
Caring for a young person actively undergoing treatment can feel overwhelming. This session will walk you through what’s normal, what’s challenging, and what can makes a difference.
You’ll learn:
- What young people commonly feel and face while on treatment
- How to respond to emotional ups and downs
- Practical “tips and tricks” to support daily life, communication, and coping
- Strategies to help you stay grounded and connected as a caregiver
If you’re currently in the thick of treatment — this is your space.
Session 2: Off Treatment
Stepping Into Life After Treatment
The end of treatment isn’t the end of the journey — it’s the beginning of a new one. This session focuses on the transition back to everyday life, which can bring its own set of challenges.
You’ll discover:
- What young people often experience after treatment ends
- How to support emotional adjustment, independence, and re‑entry into school/work
- The important role of neuropsychology in understanding cognitive and behavioural changes
- Practical tools to help your young person (and you!) navigate this new chapter with confidence
If your young person has completed treatment, this session will give you clarity, reassurance, and new strategies for the road ahead.
