Busy mind? Practice quieting the mind, while immersed in art and the tranquil surrounds of the Gallery after dark. Engage with the present moment, guided by Yasuyo Anne Uehara (holistic counsellor, and life-long meditator) in a series of short meditations, gentle stretches, breathing and mindfulness practices.

Enjoy the benefits of attending this mid-week mindfulness session:

  • Experience the quiet, reflective surrounds of the Gallery after closing time
  • Calm the over-thinking and worrying mind
  • Experience mindful presence, access your intuition, cultivate compassion and gratitude
  • Empower yourself with knowledge about the benefits of practicing mindfulness, breath and gentle movement

Engage with art in a relaxed and special after-hours atmosphere when the Gallery is closed, with an opportunity to view the current exhibition from 5.30 – 6.00pm, before the session commences

This program is repeated monthly, each session will have a similar structure but will offer different guided practices.

What to expect

Here’s what to expect at this event.

Everyone is welcome! Please contact events.plus@qagoma.qld.gov.au in advance of the program if you have any access needs or queries about the event. Find out more about Accessibility at QAGOMA and planning your visit.

Participation and content

  • The session is a seated mindfulness experience that will involve some light stretching, however it’s not an exercise class – so movement will be gentle.
  • You are welcome to come with a friend or by yourself. Many people attend the Gallery and events solo.
  • No experience is required. The session is appropriate for both beginners, as well as new and returning attendees, you’ll be guided by our expert facilitator – who is there to support you.
  • You don’t need to bring anything, but we suggest that you wear comfortable and loose clothing.

Sensory aspects

  • You will be provided with a supportive floor chair with a back or a high chair with a back.
  • The facilitator will use an amplified microphone and background music may be played.
  • We try our best to minimise sound in the space but sometimes there might be low level noise from a nearby artwork or the sounds of the Gallery.
  • The Gallery can get a little chilly as the temperature is set to 21 degrees for the preservation of the artwork, so bring a shawl or a light jacket.
  • We recommend that you remove your shoes for the session (but it’s not compulsory to).
  • You will be invited to close your eyes at times. This is a choice and eyes can remain open. Your comfort is most important.
  • This event has a capped capacity of 25 attendees.
  • No screens or projections will be used during the event, and the lighting in the space is dimly lit.

We accept Companion Cards. A Companion Card is issued by the Queensland Government, for those with a disability and need for attendant care support. The ‘Companion’ ticket type is only valid for your companion to gain complimentary entry. A General Admission or QAGOMA Member ticket is required for the Companion Card holder to access this event. A valid companion card number is required to be supplied upon booking.
