Event description

Description

In Water Pushes Sand, composer Erik Griswold, the Australian Art Orchestra, and all-star performers from China's Sichuan Province fuse Sichuan melodies and rhythms with modern jazz improvisation, and video projections that evoke the vibrant landscape of the provincial captital, Chengdu.

Commonly referred to as the 'Texas of China', Sichuan is known for its brash and friendly people, spicy food, laid back tea houses, and the distinctive twang of its spoken dialect. Its music combines colours from rustic country folk, street songs and a cacophony of gongs and cymbals.

The Australian Art Orchestra is a portable orchestra for the new millennium imagining new musical forms that reflect the energy and diversity of contemporary Australia. Led by artistic director Peter Knight, the AAO is renowned for creating work that merges musical styles and cultures in a thrilling way. Australian Art Orchestra Associates Erik Griswold and Vanessa Tomlinson have been travelling to Sichuan for 15 years and their collaborations with musicians from Sichuan have produced three large-scale shows – Chengdu Streetsongs, Sichuan Fantasy, and The Wide Alley – that have toured in China, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
