Waste Community Conversations

To improve waste reduction and the amenity of the municipality, Hume City Council is reviewing waste services provided to the community as part of the development of a new ‘Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy’.  These conversations are an opportunity to hear from experts in the field and discuss with your Hume neighbours what you would like to see prioritised. Choose a topic that interests you most, or come along to all three!

Community Conversation 1: Food and Green Waste Tuesday 30 Nov 7-8pm via Zoom

Food and green waste present Council’s greatest opportunity to divert waste away from landfill, representing about half of our garbage bins each week. Ella from Compost Community will be our guest presenter talking all things composting and green waste recovery from her 20 years of experience in the waste industry. Join the discussion to hear about the benefits of recovering green waste and the options available as a community and for Council and tell us about how you would like green waste to be managed in Hume.

Community Conversation 2: Hardwaste Disposal Wednesday 1 Dec 7-8pm via Zoom

Items too big for the bin present a big challenge for both residents and Council. How do we dispose of large items and what happens when we get it wrong? Michelle Wattus will be joining us as a special guest to discuss the current hard waste options Hume offers as well as other options available in the industry. Join us in a discussion about how we manage our items that are too big for the bin and the how we can make this service accessible for all residents.

Community Conversation 3: Ideas to Reduce Waste Thursday 2 Dec 7-8pm via Zoom

Reducing waste is a challenge for all Victorians, the Victorian government has set a target to reduce waste generation by 15% by 2030. Michelle Wattus is an environmental consultant with 20 years of experience in looking in bins. Michelle will be joining us to talk about the biggest opportunities she sees to reduce waste in our bins. Join us to hear about some of our biggest challenges in reducing waste and tell us how you think Council can help the community to reduce waste.
