War on Worms

The Small Farms Network Capital Region Inc. is a grassroots information service for people who own or live on small to medium sized rural properties around the Capital region. We run workshops, paddock walks and other events packed with useful information relevant to managing small farms in our local area.

Small Farms Network Capital Region Inc

Learn about parasitic worms in livestock and evidenced based worm management to minimise worm resistance. What worms are commonly found in this region? Can they be a problem for your stock? How can simple animal husbandry techniques be used to manage worm burdens in your animals? We will be discussing worm management for ruminants such as cattle, sheep, goats and alpacas. The workshop will be held on a small farm with sheep, alpacas and horses.
Topics will include the species of parasitic worms that affect ruminants, the lifecycle of worms, when to drench and how to read product labels. Find out about new treatment options for managing worms and how tactical worming could save you time and money. You will also learn about managing and treating lice in your herd or flock, how to identify lice and what to do if you find a problem.
There will be a practical demonstration where participants can try examining sheep for the clinical signs of worms and practise drenching. You will see what intestinal worms look like under the microscope and learn how to collect samples for faecal egg worm counts.
Presenting this workshop are Dr Jane Morrison and Dr Alex Stephens.
Jane Morrison has a passion for production animals. After 11 years in mixed rural practice she became an advisor in sheep and cattle health to maximise production. Jane taught the Farming Small Areas course at Richmond TAFE for 3 years and conducted numerous other guest lectures at Richmond TAFE and also University of Western Sydney (previously Hawkesbury Ag College). Jane has worked in industry as a production animal veterinary advisor for 13 years, with Coopers Animal Health. She is a small farmer herself with 150 breeders on a family farm in the Yass area.
Dr Alex Stephens is a District Veterinarian at South East Local Land Services and based in Yass.
One of our very own small farmers, Suzie, will be sharing her knowledge and tips about managing worms including looking at faecal samples under a microscope and how this relates to worm egg counts.
