“How theatre works: the art of collaboration”

Distinguished theatre designer Stephen Curtis, whose recent designs for The Secret River at the Anstey Hill Quarry captivated Adelaide Festival audiences, takes us behind-the-scenes to reveal the unique collaborative skills that are the basis of making great theatre - with some tips for Google and Apple on how they can transform corporate creativity by following theatre’s collaborative example.

BIO

Stephen Curtis is one of Australia’s most respected designers for screen and live performance. His extensive design career spans four decades and embraces set and costume design for drama, dance, opera, physical theatre, musicals, features and short films and exhibitions, including major collaborations and award-winning productions with Australia’s leading directors, choreographers, festivals and performance companies.

Stephen’s many striking designs for the stage include The Secret River (STC/Adelaide Festival 2017), Twelfth Night and The Blind Giant is Dancing (Lighthouse/STCSA), La bohème, The Cunning Little Vixen and Lulu (Opera Australia), The Turn of the Screw (Huston Grand Opera), Shanghai Lady Killer (Stalker Physical Theatre), Cut the Sky (Marrugecku), I Am Eora (Sydney Festival), Black Diggers (QTC/Sydney Festival), The Drovers Wife (Belvoir) and Der Ring Des Neibelungen (State Opera of South Australia). Stephen’s film production design credits include Looking for Alibrandi and Tracey Moffatt’s stunningly visual Bedevil and Night Cries.

Stephen has recently published Staging Ideas: set and costume design for theatre as an in-depth guide to the design process for theatre-makers, students and theatre-lovers, and The Designer: decorator or dramaturg? as a Platform Paper interrogating the contemporary role of the performance designer.
