WACSS Protective Behaviours Practitioner Training
This intensive workshop provides the background knowledge and skills to teach Protective Behaviours to primary school aged children.
Underpinned by trauma theory this training will provide participants with the background knowledge and skills to teach Protective Behaviours to children aged up to 12 years.
Workshop content:
Part 1 : Child Protection – Identifying, -Responding and Reporting
- Defining child abuse and neglect
- Identifying the possible signs of child abuse and neglect
- Understanding and identifying grooming behaviours
- Responding appropriately to disclosures of abuse
- Understanding recording and reporting requirements (including WA Mandatory Reporting Legislation)
Part 2 : Abuse Prevention – Protective -Behaviours Program
- Supporting children with a known or suspected past history of sexual harm when engaging in protective behaviours education
- Creating a safe and supportive environment where children can explore their thoughts, feelings
- Exploring the role of parents/caregivers in abuse prevention
- Understanding the 10 key protective behaviours topics and exploring resources to implement with children in early years settings including; body safety, secrets and surprises, personal space and consent
WA Child Safety Services is a selected provider of Protective Behaviours professional learning for the Department of Education. Certificate of Attendance for CPD provided upon request.

About the Facilitators:
Justine O’Malley MSW, GradCertCPP, BA(Ed), DipCouns
Justine is a qualified Teacher, Accredited Social Worker and Counsellor with over 30 years’ experience working in the education and child protection sectors. Justine is the author of Jasmine’s Butterflies and Michael’s Bubbles, two popular Protective Behaviours storybooks and has been the editor of a number of Protective Behaviours resources, including primary school lesson plans for the Department of Education. Justine is a lecturer and sought-after presenter both locally and across Australia.
