About this event

More than 1,000 volunteers generously give their time to help Very Special Kids care for children with life-threatening conditions.

The contribution of Family Support Volunteers is extremely valuable, as they work directly with children and families. They support families in four different ways in the home, at the hospital and in our hospice.

The contribution of Friends and corporate volunteers is also extremely valuable, as they provide administration and practical fundraising and event support to Very Special Kids.

We are proud that more than 1,000 volunteers generously give their time to support families of children with life-threatening conditions. We are also proud to have been awarded Volunteering Victoria’s 2017 Excellence Award recognising our unique and highly successful volunteering program.

Very Special Kids provides three volunteer programs. You can choose to work directly with children and families by becoming a trained Family Services Volunteer or assist with fundraising and events as part of our Friends Volunteer group. We also have opportunities for Corporate Volunteering that are aligned with our corporate partner relationships.

Family Services Volunteers assist in four different ways: in the family home, when the child is admitted to the hospital, when the child is at Very Special Kids Hospice and by participating in program activities, such as Sibling Days. Every Family Services Volunteer completes a 27-hour training program to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to support families who have a child with a life-threatening condition.

The role of the Friends Volunteers is to provide practical fundraising support to Very Special Kids. Volunteers are involved in areas such as administrative support, gardening and maintenance, fundraising events and public relations. The Friends Volunteers organise events throughout the year, including the annual Fair each November. They also play a major role in the Piggy Bank Appeal by volunteering to visit Victorian communities.
