UTS Data Arena Demonstration

The UTS Data Arena is a 360° data visualisation facility designed for collaborative exploration and discovery. High performance parallel computing drives a 32,000 pixel stereoscopic display alongside a 16 channel audio system to create an immersive and dynamic environment.

The Data Arena is built to navigate huge datasets and simulated environments, explore new interfaces for interaction, and share ideas in a collective space that moves away from isolated computing practices. We support UTS research, subject integrations and external business and government collaborations.

The UTS Data Arena turns large data sets into pictures, facilitating our understanding of complex and diverse data sets. In the shared virtual reality environment, groups of researchers can visualise, manipulate and interact with data. It is a working data research laboratory/theatre on campus at UTS.

Viewers stand in the middle of a small theatre, surrounded by a large cylindrical screen, four metres high and ten metres in diameter. The door becomes part of the screen. Picture clarity is achieved from 1mm pixels. A high performance computer graphics (GPU) cluster of eight servers drives sixteen 3D-stereo video projectors, edge-blended to create a seamless panorama.

Each user wears Active-Shutter Glasses, synchronised with the video projectors to achieve a stereoscopic visual effect. These glasses are otherwise see-through. Everyone is still visible. To complement the visual experience, a 16-channel audio system surrounds the Arena. Speakers fitted behind the perforated screen allow sound to be positioned in 3D space.

In the Data Arena you can surround yourself in data to observe changes, explore ideas, refine a model, improve flow, discover the unknown, and teach and learn. Some recent and popular projects will be shown.

Data Arena demonstrations run for 30 minutes.
