About this event

The UWA Defence and Security Institute in partnership with Pacific Forum warmly invite you to attend a private roundtable discussion ‘Perspectives on the Future of the Alliance in the Indo-Pacific’.

The U.S. – Australia Alliance Next Generation Leaders Program Hawaii brings together the ten most outstanding scholars from the two iterations of the program – the first iteration culminating in July 2020 and the current culminating in August 2022. Both iterations of the program held regional workshops around Australia with the strongest 20 candidates invited to attend a week-long National Workshop in Canberra – five candidates from each national workshop make up our Hawaii group of ten next generation alliance scholars.

The final activity in the program is a trip to the United States to engage with policy makers and to experience the U.S. – Australia Alliance in the Indo-Pacific first hand. Whilst in Hawaii, the program will engage with leading experts, diplomats, government and the military, and also fellow emerging scholars and future leaders - which all represent the intricate day-to-day workings of the alliance.

The ‘Perspectives on the Future of the Alliance in the Indo-Pacific’ roundtable discussion will bring together some of the leading experts from throughout the region in order to help facilitate a lively discussion on a broad range of topics. The discussion will cover topics including: diplomacy and shared values; the security-economics nexus; climate policy; and also a broad range of security issues.

Our speakers and moderators include: Australian Consul-General Ms. Andrea Gleeson; John Hemmings and Adam Morrow from Pacific Forum; Dr Kristi Govella from the University of Hawaii; Dr Victoria Keener and Dr Denny Roy from East-West Center; Dr Ethan Allen from the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies; and Dr Troy Lee-Brown from the University of Western Australia Defence and Security Institute.

This roundtable will operate under the Chatham House Rule to ensure a more open and lively discussion. The program wishes to thank the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Embassy in Australia, and the U.S. Consulate in Western Australia for all their support. UWA DSI is honoured to be partnering with the wonderful team at Pacific Forum.
