For support workers to develop the knowledge and skills needed to assist customers to manage their urinary elimination needs via a catheter.

For support workers to develop the essential knowledge and skills needed to assist customers to manage their urinary elimination needs via a catheter or external drainage device. The trainer will show the management of several types of catheters and external drainage devices and discuss potential complications.

  • Urinary System Anatomy and Physiology:
  • Explain the anatomy and physiology of the urinary system, including the role of the kidneys, bladder, and urethra.
  • Types of Urinary Catheters:
  • Describe several types of urinary catheters, including Foley catheters, intermittent catheters, and suprapubic catheters.
  • Catheter Care and Maintenance
  • Practice proper catheter care and maintenance procedures, including cleaning, drainage bag management, and preventing infection. Stress the importance of keeping a closed urinary drainage system.
  • Complications and Troubleshooting
  • Recognise common complications related to urinary catheterisation, such as infection, blockage, and catheter-related trauma.

Demonstrate in a simulated environment the correct technique for emptying a urine catheter drainage bag.
