Event description
Come and take part in an exciting exchange about urban integration and urban underground spaces.

About this Event

Over the past two decades, in the context of continued global population growth and increasing urbanisation, cities around the world have been faced with the challenges of limited free space, soaring land prices, traffic congestion and deteriorating environmental conditions. In response to these challenges, urban underground space development is widely considered as an effective approach to help contemporary cities to achieve urban sustainability, resilience and liveability goals; and as an opportunity to move a variety of (functional) urban infrastructure underground in order to free up urban surface space for amenity (See Admiraal and Cornaro 2018).

There are a range of initiatives around the world calling for a better engagement and coordination on what is happening below the surface in cities. So far, these efforts have tried to engage groups of urban planners, engineers, geologists and policy makers to demonstrate the relevance of thinking about the subterranean dimension when planning for the city. These initiatives have been fruitful in engaging and capturing the attention of a diversity of organisations and individuals, including academics from a range of disciplines involved in the built environment. An important part of the workshop’s interest is also to think who else could/should be invited to the conversation.

This workshop builds momentum to take the discussion to a next level and formulate question(s) about policy, governance, public engagement and investment, that will further our thinking when it comes to the integration of urban underground spaces into planning practices. We will be joined by leading thinkers of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association on Underground Space (ITACUS), academics, policy makers and industry experts, engaging in topics such as critical urban infrastructure, the right to the city and the role of (subterranean) urban commons.

Come and take part in an exciting exchange about urban integration and urban underground spaces.
