About this event

Help shape Playable City Melbourne during Melbourne International Games Week starting with an introduction to the Watershed Pervasive Media Studio approach from Hilary O’Shaughnessy (Bristol, UK).

The Pervasive Media Studio hosts a brilliant community of over 100 artists, creative companies, technologists and academics exploring experience design and creative technology. Building on their experience in Bristol, Recife, Lagos, Tokyo and Saõ Paulo this symposium will develop a plan for Melbourne as a playable city.

Responding to the unique urban environments and communities of Melbourne, presenters include: N'arweet Carolyn Briggs (Boon Wurrung Foundation), Councillor Tim Baxter (City of Port Phillip), Dale Leorke (Tampere University, Finland), Bree Trevena (ARUP), Seb Chan (ACMI) and Anna Burkey (State Library Victoria).

The invitation-only event is hosted in the Capitol Theatre Salon with a focus on workshops and discussion across industry, communities and local government to explore opportunities for Playable City Melbourne in collaboration with Watershed, ACMI and RMIT.

Playable cities connect people and place through creative technologies, making the city a platform for play. Exploring other ways of being in public space, First Peoples connection to place, and more-than-human infrastructure Playable City Melbourne talks to our multi-layered civic identity – as a creative city, technological city, a diverse and multicultural city, knowledge city and liveable city that is growing fast. Urban play calls for a diverse community of designers, game developers, scientists, writers, architects, artists, producers, performers, players, bureaucrats and more.
