This course provides educators with both low tech and high-tech tools and implementation tips aligned to the principles of UDL

The struggle for educators to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners is universal. As there is no “typical” learner, educators are tasked with designing flexible lessons and assessments that can be easily accessed by all students. Universal Design for Learning is a framework that can guide teachers in the planning and delivery of instruction, by providing multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression.This workshop will use a combination of lecture, multimedia, demonstration, and hands-on activities to provide educators with both low tech and high-tech tools and implementation tips aligned to the principles of UDL.Participants will gain a foundational understanding of UDL, have the opportunity to engage with universally-designed features, and explore ideas for implementing technology within their curricular planning as a means to increase accessibility and support inclusivity. Participants are encouraged to bring a unit of instruction they currently use in their class.This event will be help face-to-face at UNSW Kensington with social distancing and COVID Safe practices in place.About the PresenterDr Terry Cumming is a Professor of Special Education in the School of Education and Academic Lead Education at the UNSW Disability Innovation Institute. Therese is a Scientia Education Academy Fellow and has had extensive leadership experiences in learning and teaching. Her teaching and research focus on promoting the use of evidence-based practices to support the learning and behaviour of students with disabilities and the use of technology to create inclusive, accessible, and engaging learning environments. Terry’s passion for teaching has been recognised with two Faculty of Arts and Social Science Dean’s Awards for Teaching Excellence, an UNSW Australia Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence, and the Australian College of Educators Ralph Rawlinson Award for Education of Students with Disadvantage. Her publications include 3 co-authored books and a co-edited book, as well as many book chapters, journal articles and national and international conference papers.
