UNE TamTalks: Women's History Month

UNE TamworthTamworth, NSW
Friday, Mar 20 from 11 am to 12:30 pm
Overview

This Women's History Month, join us in Tamworth for a morning of enlightenment from our subject-matter experts.

Four female academics, four powerful perspectives. This Women's History Month, join us in Tamworth for a morning of enlightenment from our subject-matter experts in this special event, hosted by UNE Tamworth.

What you’ll find out:

Over the years archaeologists have uncovered numerous human burials, complete with swords, shields, sometimes even boats and chariots. They were initially described as male ‘warrior’ graves - because, well, women weren’t warriors - or were they? Professor Melanie Fillios examines the archaeological evidence for female ‘warriors' and promises to change the way you view that next shield and sword you see in a museum.

What were women like in antiquity? How do we know? Want to find out? Associate Professor Bronwyn Hopwood will help us discover some women from the ancient Mediterranean world and what we can learn about them from artefacts on display in UNE’s Museum of Antiquities (UNEMA)

You’ve heard of women as witches, but what about girls? Dr Molly Northcott will discuss the notion that girls are an often a neglected part of women's history through the lens of witchcraft trials in England and Colonial America; their history, their experiences and their cultural experience of being girls provides significant insights into the witch-hunting phenomena.

The stereotype of women under Nazi rule (1933-1945) is that of blonde-haired, blue-eyed ‘baby makers.’ While women’s rights did regress in the Third Reich, the pervasiveness of Nazi ideology paradoxically also ‘empowered’ women in a number of ways Dr Teresa van der Kraan will unpack some of the ways in which German women were both victims and collaborators in the Third Reich and challenges the perception of women as passive under Nazi rule.
