Event description

Rights in aged care – Understanding the new Charter of Aged Care Rights and how it will empower and protect aged care recipients

From 1 July 2019, the Australian Government is introducing a new and simpler Charter of Aged Care Rights (the Charter). The Charter will make it easier for aged care consumers, their families and carers to understand what they can expect from an aged care provider, regardless of the typle of aged care they receive. The Charter aligns with the Aged Care Quality Standards (Standards) that also commence on 1 July 2019. The Charter and the new Standards place the consumer at the centre of care by giving them choice and recognising their right to be treated with respect. The Charter acknowledges that identity, culture and diversity are to be valued and supported. Providers have responsibilities to sign the Charter, assist consumers to understand the Charter and give them the option of signing it too. Consumers can play an important role in the delivery of high quality care and services. Meeting consumer responsibilities helps the provider to work with consumers to get the care and services that best meet their needs.

OPAN is supporting the Department of Health with raising awareness and providing education about the Charter which includes support to aged care service providers and consumers. The purpose of this webinar is to brief and prepare your organisation for what’s to come.

The briefing will cover:

  • Key changes to the Charter and rationale for change

  • What it means for aged care consumer and aged care providers

  • Timelines for implementation of the new Charter

  • The Charter signing requirements

  • Consumer responsibilities

  • Resources and training available for support
