Childhood trauma is something which is unfortunately far too common in Australian society. When that trauma is complex the impact on the child’s development, nuero-architecture, and life long health can be profound. As educators we have the opportunity to help heal the site of trauma through connection and trauma informed practice. We can be healing heroes to the children affected. In this session we will discuss the impact of trauma on the developing brain, memory, relationships and long term health. We will also be exploring principles of trauma sensitive education, such as the importance of building secure attachments, working with behaviours and emotional triggers, trauma sensitive environments, promoting self-regulation, and the implications for learning. We will finish with a focus on Mindfulness strategies which helps to promote healing and cognitive function in young children impacted by trauma.
We are excited to have Kate Hodgekiss from Engaging Curriculum Solutions presenting this wonderful workshop that is essential and relevant for all educators from all service types. Her personal and professional account of trauma is not to be missed.
