Turning the Dial

The Western Australian Government, through the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, is focusing resources on supporting the growth of premium and value-add food and beverage businesses through the Food Industry Innovation project. The project aims to develop the full potential of WA food and beverage businesses that areproducing premium products, adding value to raw produce, staging their product for domestic and international markets, creating jobs and boosting the state's economy.

Turning the Dial is a 2-day event dedicated to food waste, sustainable packaging and sustainability beyond an environmental lens.

Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre

Facilitated by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), Turning the Dial is a two-day event tailored towards food and beverage manufacturers and is the first of its kind in Western Australia. All WA food and beverage manufacturers and invested industry stakeholders are encouraged to attend. The 2-day event will focus on current issues facing the sector including: <ul><li>Management of food waste. </li><li>Packaging and the broader circular economy agenda. </li><li>Advancing WA business sustainability credentials.</li></ul>It will provide attendees with practical information on: <ul><li>Global best practice to guide discussions. </li><li>Solutions for immediate application. </li></ul>In addition to acting as the conduit for expert intelligence and analysis, Turning the Dial will provide industry capacity building and networking, and will offer an introduction to market innovators and R&amp;D advances.

Read about your workshop presenters below:Nerida Kelton has worked in the Packaging industry for over 24 years’ and is the Vice President Sustainability &amp; Save Food for the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and the Executive Director for the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP). Nerida is passionate about Sustainable &amp; Circular Packaging and Save Food Packaging Design and is the lead for the Save Food Packaging Consortium project within the Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre and was the packaging representative on the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment’s National Food Waste Strategy Steering Committee. Ralph Moyle is an experienced food-packaging consultant with 40 years’ in the food processing industry and 30 years’ focused on packaging. Through a unique range of senior management experiences in Packaging, Operations, Technical and Quality Assurance in large and medium FMCG businesses, Ralph has brought increased value to many organisations through the value of smarter packaging at less waste. Dr Janet Howieson specializes in post-harvest research for the seafood industry. She currently has projects across many seafood sectors including finfish, prawn, octopus and pearl oyster. The projects encompass new product development, supply and value chain analysis, traceability, predictive modelling and new market development. Dr Howieson previously worked at the Department of Fisheries in Strategic Planning and Policy.Barbara Albert is the Co-CEO of 100% Renewables, a consultancy specialising in the development of net-zero strategies. Barbara is a speaker, podcast host of ‘Driving Net Profit with Zero Emissions’ and award-winning author of the book 'Energy Unlimited'. She is passionate about business and sustainability and believes that reaching net-zero emissions is achievable and profitable when done right. Mark Mitchell is the Chairman of The SuperCool Group of Companies which operate in global mobile air conditioning equipment, transport refrigeration, compressor design and manufacture, refrigeration tools and equipment, industrial hoses and connections, and temperature monitoring solutions for the cold chain. Mark is committed to his company mission; Advancement and innovation in services and manufacturing to provide HVAC/R solutions for a better world.Adam Wade is a passionate cold chain professional currently responsible for driving a number of logistics lead initiatives that will facilitate Bega Dairy &amp; Drinks (BDD) in achieving its vision of delivering refrigerated product in the best cold chain network in Australia. With BDD being passionate about improving the cold chain in Australia and also reducing its own environmental footprint Adam is currently representing BDD in its involvement with the Australian Food Cold Chain Council AFCCC a not-for-profit group of industry leaders committed to reducing food wastage and improving innovation, compliance and food safety for the Australian community.Associate Professor Min Teah is Dean of Research within the Faculty of Business and Law at Curtin University. She has a background in creative advertising and graphic design and specialises in consumer behaviour, brand semiotics and design, brand strategy and storytelling. Her research portfolio extends across retail, cosmetics and the food and beverage sector. Min is passionate about good packaging and considers herself a connoisseur and avid collector of cans, bottles, cartons and boxes.

Turning the Dial will feature MC Josh Byrne – Gardening Australia’s WA presenter and Dean, Sustainable Futures, at Curtin University – Josh is an environmental scientist and urban design professional with a national profile as a consultant, researcher and communicator in urban sustainability. His technical expertise spans amenity horticulture, water sensitive design, high performance housing and sustainable urban development.Nick Stamatiou is a leading intellectual property strategy and tech commercialisation expert with over 15 years of experience working with global tech businesses. He is an experienced patent and trade marks attorney, litigator, and commercialisation advisor that has represented multinational companies. Before starting his own Seattle-based consulting firm, Radian Global, he built and ran the IP Strategy and Commercialisation team for Deloitte. Nick currently splits his time between the Radian Global business and Whole., a rapidly growing foodtech venture that already has the interest of some of the world’s largest food and ingredient processing companies due to its ability to eliminate waste and create highly functional plant-based ingredients and flavours.Ian Batt is founder of Small Things Wine, a Margaret River-based wine brand that specializes in premium canned wines. He has always had a passion for wine, and he saw the potential for canned wines to revolutionize the industry in 2010 whilst studying winemaking at University after spending almost 30 years in the film industry. With the goal of making great wine more accessible, convenient, and environmentally friendly, he created Small Things Wine with the first vintage in 2018. Our Kinds addresses Regenerative Economy principles through collaborative relationships across the supply chain. Surrounding yourself with good people and smart partnerships is critical. It’s good to have lofty visions and to understand that there are many ways they can be brought to life. Every day you must reprioritise. Karen Monaghan has found that can be hard in business because people become very attached to ideas and concepts or ways of working. That makes getting things done harder. We must be courageous to find and act on solutions – new and ancient. The approach might change, but the vision doesn’t. Be like water. If it’s hard it’s probably not the best solution, find another way. Mark Field is a former Group Technical Director for UK Based 2 Sisters Food Group and Head of Coles Own Brand, Coles Supermarkets, Australia. He is now the founder and CEO of Prof Consulting Group and award-winning international consulting group specialising across the food and grocery supply chains. Prof supports their clients through growth consulting through innovation, new market access and strategic procurement in addition to running a dedicated ESG team specialising from human rights, animal welfare, sustainable packaging, and environmental operations. The ability to bring ESG and Growth into the same conversation or strategy helps deliver profitable long-term outcomes.Francesca Goodman-Smith is TRANSFORM Program Leader at the Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) in Australia. She leads a research portfolio designed to transform unavoidable food waste into valuable new products. Prior to joining the CRC she worked as Waste Minimisation Manager for Foodstuffs NZ, New Zealand’s largest grocery retailer. In this role she solidified research and industry partnerships to understand the emerging sector of upcycled foods, where surplus and by-products are transformed into new food products.

Meri Fatin is one of Perth’s sought-after interviewers and panel facilitators. Formerly a producer of news and current affairs radio at ABC Perth, Meri now focuses on climate-related events and conversations. She is the founder of WA Climate Leaders Inc, a cross-sector network that drives leadership in Western Australian business and industry to accelerate emissions reduction and climate action. The vision is that Western Australia is a world leader in the race to net zero emissions.Adam Carrel is a partner in the EY Climate Change and Sustainability Services team, at Ernst &amp; Young. He has been with the organisation for more than 10 years and has worked across many countries and sectors. The common theme of all his work is helping businesses to better align their business models to global, environmental and social imperatives. Adam focuses on Sustainable Development and how to build an equitable, ethical and sustainable global economy.Faz Pollard is the director of Adarsh Australia and multiple subsidiary companies. With decades of product development and engineering experience, Faz is an expert in all things manufacturing. Together with his team, Faz has expanded into adjacent manufacturing industries including commercial 3D printing, medical consumables, and now pulp-fibre packaging with Adarsh Fibre.Michael Dossor is a well-known packaging industry personality and general manager of Result Group. He is an active industry contributor, participating in education forums and on advisory groups helping to shape the packaging industry’s future. Michael is passionate about identifying new packaging technologies, processes and materials with the potential to drive innovation whilst also being committed to achieve greater sustainability and food waste control in the packaging space. He also has a keen interest in transforming brands' packaging into digital identities and has been responsible for launching a number of smart packaging technologies not available until now on the Australian market.Huia Adkins is an experienced professional who co-creates circular strategy and action. She utilises her expertise and understanding of the principles, tools and strategies of a circular economy to help deliver workable solutions that support the global sustainability goals. She has been part of, and project managed, teams across a wide range of disciplines including planning, policy and strategy development, environmental impact assessment, sustainable construction and waste management and resource recovery. Huia has more than 19 years’ working across private, public and tertiary education sectors; facilitating the development and implementation of environmental policy, programs and plans, assessment and analysis of expected outcomes and advice to key stakeholders on pathways forward. Sam Oakden is the Head of the Australian Food Pact at Stop Food Waste Australia, The Pact is a pre-competitive collaboration to make Australia’s food system more sustainable, resilient, and circular. It’s a multi-year commitment by the businesses who grow, make and sell our food to develop solutions and implement change at scale.  In 2022 he was awarded the inaugural emerging circular economy leader award in the Planet Ark Australian Circular Economy Hub awards. Sam has an agricultural science background and has worked on the implementation of the Australian National Food Waste Strategy since early 2018.

Brett Henderson is a professional facilitator. Currently supporting businesses with circular economy aspirations such as sustainable packaging, cold chain optimisation and traceability. All through collaboration with industry, government, and academia. We cannot do this on our own, collaboration is an in demand future skill we all need to develop, even with your competitors.Rob Whyte is the co-founder and Managing Director of Hippie Food Co, a premium Australian Kombucha producer. Hippie&#x27;s commitment to quality and innovation has led to their unique style of brewing using the French wine-making style, Pétillant Naturel (Pet-Nat), which produces a more natural and satisfying finish. He has been driving Hippie&#x27;s mission to provide an alternative choice for consumers as a non-alcohol and alt-alcohol category since the company&#x27;s inception in 2014. Sara Orr is the Sales Executive and Quality Assurance Manager of Trandos Farms, WA’s largest grower and supplier of fresh Sweet Corn and Green Beans, growing across 4 locations in WA. Having focused on Quality Assurance and Packaging Procurement for many of her 26 years she has witnessed and been a part of the implementation of changes that have been intrical in the business’s success in reducing packaging and making steps towards ongoing sustainability in Horticulture.Duncan McFarlane is Professor of Industrial Information Engineering and head of the Distributed Information &amp; Automation Laboratory within the Institute for Manufacturing at Cambridge University in the UK. His work involves the development of manufacturing automation and control systems and more broadly the use of digital systems across the industrial supply chain. Prof McFarlane is the lead on the Digital Manufacturing on a Shoestring programme which is investigating how low-cost, readily available digital technologies can be implemented to support productivity and sustainability in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The project is being applied in different regions in the UK and internationally.Mel Holland co-founded Rocky Ridge Brewing Co. in 2017 as a diversification of their 5th gen family farm in Jindong. Rocky Ridge is on a mission to brew better beer in a better way; by looking after the planet, being active members of the community, and by making delicious beer while having a whole lot of fun doing it! Rocky Ridge Brewing Co proudly operates a fully off grid circular waste facility in the SW of WA. They are also Carbon Neutral for all 3 emission scopes, and are Certified Sustainable. Mel heads up Rocky Ridge&#x27;s ESG department to push this innovation further, as they strive for Net Zero Direct Emissions from their brewing process by 2025!David Kilpatrick has been driving innovation in senior leadership roles in textiles, packaging and F&amp;B for over 35 years. David has a background in Financial Services and was a partner with Ernst and Young (then Ernst &amp; Whinney). He has since been CEO of a major Australian textile company with a global customer base, been involved at Board level in a substantial dairy company, was CEO of a flexible paper packaging company and in 2010, co-founded the company now known as Zipform Packaging. Zipform Packaging has since established itself as the global leader in linear formed, paper bottom, high barrier rigid fibre packaging. M﻿ore speakers will be announced soon.
