Tristan Lee Piano: Haydn, Schoenberg, Cage and Prokofiev
In this recital, pianist Tristan Lee explores three ground-breaking works of the twentieth century, alongside the Classicism of Haydn. Commencing with Schoenberg’s aphoristic set of miniatures, Six Little Piano Pieces Op. 19, this recital then surges forward in Haydn’s largest work for the keyboard, Piano Sonata Hob. XVI/52. Allowing for a moment of quiet reflection, Cage’s controversial 4’33’’ is followed by Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 7, which he composed amidst the horrors of World War II. In this exciting recital, each work uniquely pushes the boundaries of pianistic and musical expression.

About the artist
Tristan Lee
Tristan Lee is a Melbourne born concert pianist, pedagogue and academic, whose performances, recordings and lectures have received critical acclaim throughout Australia and abroad. He has played in major venues in Australia, France, Italy, Lithuania and China, including regular recitals at the Melbourne Recital Centre, Perth Concert Hall, Wigmore Hall, Royal Academy of Music, and St Martin in the Fields in London, Shanghai and Chongqing Grand Theatre, Guangzhou Opera House, amongst many others. As a soloist Lee has performed with orchestras in Australia and the UK, playing concertos by Mozart, Beethoven, Grieg, Rachmaninoff and Brahms. A keen interpreter of music of the present day, Lee regularly performs contemporary piano music and has given numerous world premieres of works by Australian and British composers.
Tristan Lee has appeared on Australian radio and television and is a regular performer on Australian Digital Concert Hall and 3MBS FM radio. His album, ‘Liszt’s Italian Pilgrimage’ was released on Move Records in 2019. He recorded a CD of Brahms piano music in London in 2014, and has a forthcoming release of Beethoven Piano Sonatas
Tristan Lee studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, gaining his Masters in Performance in 2009 under Head of Keyboard, Graham Scott. He gained a Bachelor of Music in Performance at the University of Melbourne in 2008, studying under Glenn Riddle. Following his studies in Manchester, Lee remained in the UK for five more years, giving many recitals and being mentored by Leslie Howard and Benjamin Frith. Between 2012 and 2014, Lee undertook a period of study with renowned French pianist, François-Frédéric Guy in Paris, generously supported by the Geoffrey Parsons Trust. During his studies, Lee was a prize winner at numerous national and international piano competitions including the Australian National Piano Award, Australian Youth Piano Recital (1st Prize and Gold Medal), and ‘Prix Scarbo’ Manchester, and he was the recipient of many other prestigious awards and scholarships, including the Ian Potter Trust (2009).
In 2015, Tristan Lee returned to Australia and the University of Melbourne to undertake a PhD researching Liszt and Beethoven, under the supervision of Professors Ian Holtham and Kerry Murphy. Lee has been casual lecturer in Piano at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM), University of Melbourne since 2017. Following the completion of his PhD in 2019, Lee has resided in the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick (with his partner, pianist Gintaute Gataveckaite, and pet Tenterfield Terrier, George) performing regularly for Melbourne audiences and teaching a small cohort of dedicated and talented piano students.
