Traditional Wooden Long Bow Making Workshop @ Virginia Jones Studio
28 Baldock Street, Moorooka Brisbane
Thursday 16th & Friday 17th; 8am till 3pm March 2017
Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th; 8am till 3pm March 2017.
You will be learning traditional techniques of wooden longbow making. You will come away from the workshop with the knowledge and skills to make your own longbow. You will learn how to make a bowstring that perfectly complements your own bow and understand the art of tillering, - the process of finding the bow’s optimal arc by carefully removing wood along its length. Students will learn how to tiller their bows to precise measurements of draw length and draw weight depending on the archer. After the bow is functional, an aesthetic finish by sanding and oiling will be applied before the final firing of your bow.
Sholto Jones of Virginia Jones Studio will be assisting master craftsman Lars Richter in heading up this challenging and fun bow making workshop for all ages. In his role as studio manager, Sholto acts as head technician, co-designer and curator. His background and experience in the boat building industry as lead engineer on wooden craft hull construction has given him an appreciation of traditional materials along with the skills to express the values of the handmade. Through years of experience he has developed a heightened awareness of the possibilities and limitations of materials to produce objects that communicate the connection between body and mind. A supportive instructor, his special talent lies in facilitating others as they produce high quality work − whether resulting in a boat, traditional long bow, ceramic tableware, tea sets or giftware.
