About this event

If a rope breaks when you’re out at sea, up in a bell tower, or out on a remote farm, or if you can’t afford a costly new rope, your only option may be to repair the broken rope yourself. In this workshop, participants will learn two classic methods of joining rope ends together: the short splice and the long splice (if time permits, the workshop may also cover the eye splice), and when to use which one. It’s best to be prepared!

Age: TEEN 13-17 and ADULT 18+

Skill Level: NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Inclusions: All raw materials (wheat, ribbon, thread, seed heads) and tuition

What to Bring: Snacks, Lunch, Water, Notepad

Clothing Guidelines: Comfortable to allow free movement of hands and arms. Closed toed shoes are required.

Laura Goodin learned rope splicing as a tower-bell ringer, and loves the connection the skill gives her to mariners, ringers, farmers, and builders of centuries past.
