TOGETHER AND NOT ALONE:

Breaking down barriers through conversation

Waan Wada Joognaa (Somali phrase meaning “We are all here together”) – hear directly from young people about what your service can do to support them more

This invitation is open to all services who have contact with young people in this region - youth services, schools, libraries, community groups and community centres. We request that all local services aim to send representation to this important event being led and presented by young people.

Hear from local Australian Somali and Australian Middle Eastern young people who are advocating greater accessibility, participation and support for themselves and other young people living within our region.

Find out how your service can be more culturally accessible & promote/work with communities of young people that you are currently not yet connected to.

There will be young people as MCs, presentations, a panel and various opportunities for discussion. Supported by Banyule Youth Services, Darebin Youth Services and Himilo Community Connect.

Schedule as follows:

- Welcomes and introductions

- ‘Get to know us’ – introductions to culturally-diverse young people living in our region

- Cultural training – young people teaching workers their tips for being culturally aware in the work you do with them and their families

- ‘Challenges we face’ – find out directly from the young people what barriers they experience as African Australian young people

- Panel of young people to answer questions and talk to the topic

- Discussions with services – a chance to ask questions and get feedback about what your service can do in this space

- Tasty lunch and Spoken Word entertainment from 12pm onwards (enjoy Middle Eastern food, Somali sweets & tea) – a chance to mingle with young people, network and promote programs/opportunities

We ask you to please complete this short questionnaire after RSVPing so that the young people can plan the event based around your identified interests and needs: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QCW5C6W
