Event description

Description

To celebrate the arrival of touring exhibition The Way of the Reformer | Gough Whitlam in his Century in Broken Hill, the Hon. John Faulkner, Chair of the Whitlam Institute, will speak at Trades Hall about the legacy of former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam and the government he led.

Gough Whitlam was never going to be satisfied with just a change of government; he wanted to change the country – for the better.

To achieve his goals and his vision for the nation Gough Whitlam worked tirelessly to make the Labor Party more electable and ensure its policies met the needs of modern Australia.

Mr Faulkner will speak about the Whitlam years and how the Whitlam policies – the ideal of an expansive, widening state, looking outward to the world and forward to an Australia where all citizens lived with the wide horizons of expanded possibility and fulfilled potential – remain relevant today.

John Faulkner was a Labor Senator for New South Wales from 1989 to 2015, and held a number of ministries, including Veterans' Affairs, Defence Science and Personnel, the Environment, Sport and Territories, Cabinet Secretary, Special Minister of State and Defence. He served as Leader of the Opposition in the Senate from 1996 to 2004. He has also held a range of senior positions within the Australian Labor Party, including National President and Assistant General Secretary of the New South Wales Branch.
