About this event

At The ReDress Hub, we're here to help you on your journey to be more 'circular' with your clothing choices, avoid or reduce the consumption of fast-fashion, and clothing and textile waste.

This series of six workshops, takes the next step in your circular clothing journey by showing you how to design and remake existing clothing into something new. They have been created to further your skills in creating your own handmade 'slow-fashion' clothes, contributing to the global circular clothing movement, as well as an introduction to the design process.

This series has been specially designed for year 7-12 secondary students who wish to advance their sewing skills in an after-school time slot (Thursdays 4:00-6:00pm).

The amazing Lisa Haas (a designer and experienced high-school technology teacher) will be your workshop facilitator, guiding you over the six workshops, to deconstruct, design, reconstruct and finish a garment for you to proudly wear at the end of the course.

It is also the perfect workshop series for those wishing to enter the 2024 ReDressed Competition and ReFashion Show.

The Slow Fashion Sewing Advanced Series includes:

  • Week 1, MAY 16 (2 hrs): Understanding the construction of the garment, fabric types, notions and starting the design process to form ideas
  • Week 2, MAY 23 (2 hrs): Designing of the new garment, making decisions about the reuse of its different components and how to deconstruct with maximum efficiency
  • Week 3, MAY 30 (2hrs): Deconstruction of the existing garment, starting the reconstruction of the new garment, exploring new ideas, and reconsidering initial ideas
  • Week 4, JUNE 6 (2hrs): Continuation of the reconstruction of the garment
  • Week 5, JUNE 13 (2hrs): Detailing and/or embellishment of the garment and continuation of its reconstruction
  • Week 6, JUNE 20 (2hrs): Final garment construction & finishing

  • PLEASE NOTE: there may be some tasks we will need you to complete before the workshop in the following week

If you can attend all weeks except one, please get in touch with us as we would like to work with you to see how we can still make this work for you.

We hope to see you at The ReDress Hub soon!

Change this ordinary denim shirt into something special! (See images below). This is the type of creation you can learn to make as part of this course, while also upskilling your sewing and design skills.

Lisa is a practicing designer and experienced high-school technology teacher, with post-graduate study in fashion design and design technology. She is skilled in a broad range of textile-based techniques.

Her design ethos is strongly grounded in sustainability and all her work is made from either repurposed or natural materials.

Lisa predominately designs and creates homewares and accessories but also upcycles second-hand clothing, for herself and, we are pleased to say, you can also see her work for sale at The ReDress Hub.

Lisa works with a range of students, up until recently in a school setting, but now with individuals or small groups in her studio in Somerset and at The ReDress Hub. She is a patient and thoughtful teacher who believes everyone is capable of successfully completing their own design projects.
