Event description

Description

Brought to you by Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres in partnership with BAD!SLAM!NO!BISCUIT!, The Salt Room presents poetry in its many forms. Featuring national, international and Territory poets alongside performers from varied disciplines, this is a night that combines experiments, entireties and fractures.

July’s edition of The Salt Room features writer and theatre-maker Emma Gibson, Sydney-based spoken word and slam poet champ Troy Wong and local blues noise duo Okinawa Girls.

ARTIST BIOS

Emma Gibson is a writer and theatre maker. She writes plays, writes about plays (as a reviewer) and writes about place. She has collaborated on a number of pieces and recently worked on a place-based poetry installation in Spain. Emma is the co-writer of “War Stories”, which has toured Manchester and Ireland. Her play “Bloodletting” won the Bread and Roses Theatre award and was produced in London in 2015. Her previous work in Canberra includes the site-specific monologue series “Dead Beauty Queens” at You Are Here, and “Love Cupboard”, “Widowbird” and “Johnny Castellano is Mine” at the Street Theatre.
Troy Wong is an English teacher by day & spoken word poet by night. Since his first performance in November 2013 he has been a regular in the Sydney spoken word circuit. He was a NSW state finalist in the 2014 Australian Poetry Slam & a national finalist in the 2015 Australian Poetry Slam, performing at the Sydney Opera House. Other performance credits include feature sets at Enough Said in Wollongong, Word in Hand in Glebe, Newtown Festival, Sydney Fringe Festival, Little Features, Creative Conversations, Three Poets Speak, Peacetalks, & Melody Poetry Desire. Off stage, he hosts the monthly Parramatta Poetry Slam. When he isn't covered in children, he enjoys sending snapchats of fruit.

Okinawa Girls are a BluesNoisePunkPop duo from Canberra. They cannot tell you the dissonance - but they can tell you that cherry blossoms are blooming; that whiskey is with you in lonely mysterious nights, ripe and ethereal.
