Event description
Join us as we explore colonial Victoria's quest to cure insanity with Jill Giese

About this Event

As part of the Australian Heritage Festival, author and clinical psychologist Jill Giese presents a video based on her prize-winning book, The Maddest Place on Earth.

Gold-fuelled Melbourne was booming, but dwelling in the fault lines of the proud young colony was an alarming fact – Victoria had the highest rate of insanity in the world. Was it the antipodean sun, gold mania, excessive masturbation, the heady pace of modern life? To cure the excessive insanity, the colonials embarked on an ambitious quest.

Join us as we bring to life a fascinating time in Melbourne’s history with a truly local context for those who walk or take in Yarra Bend Park - the site of Victoria's first asylum.

This video screening will include an introduction and Q & A session with the author.

Book your place and we’ll send you a link to attend the Zoom event.
