The Price of Gold by Thom Pierce

Special Opening Event

5.30pm - 6.15pm - Guided tour of the exhibition with photographer Thom Pierce

Venue: Paddington Reservoir Gardens Eastern Chamber

6.30pm - 7.30pm - Australian Human Rights Institute Discussion - Capturing Community: A photographic exploration of the human impact of mining

Venue: The Imperial Hotel 252 Oxford Street Paddington

In May 2016, the South African High Court granted an order to certify the largest class action ever brought in South Africa against 32 mining companies. The action was initiated by mineworkers who had contracted silicosis and tuberculosis.

In a remarkable collaboration, photographer Thom Pierce worked with civil society groups to photograph all 56 of the miners in their homes, capturing the impact of their work and health status on their families and community.

At this special opening event, Pierce will discuss his involvement in the case and its contribution to the human rights of the miners and their families.

Associate Professor Beth Goldblatt will discuss the court judgment and how Pierce's photographs inspired her and collaborator Professor Shirin Rai’s article about compensating families of the miners for their care responsibilities.

The talk will be chaired by Professor Andrea Durbach from the Australian Human Rights Institute, Faculty of Law at UNSW Sydney.

The Price of Gold is on display at
Paddington Reservoir Gardens as part of the Head On Photo Festival until Sunday, May 20, 2018.
