About this event

  • 7 hours

A beautiful walking tour to unravel the mysteries of Dangar Island, a small water only access island in the Hawkesbury River. Meeting at the Brooklyn marina we catch a heritage ferry across to the island to be welcomed by David Reynolds, President of the Dangar Island Historical Society and start our history insights over coffee on the deck. Discover the rich history of 'Mullet Island' as we meander through parks, community sites, beaches and natural bushland. Our guide takes us on a historical journey from first contact between traditional custodians of the river and the newcomers; to stories of pirates and smugglers; the days of commodious streamers and the building of the first bridge. After a waterside lunch we walk to the top of the island to enjoy the natural beauty of this very unique and remote island and surrounding views of Dyarubbin.

Dangar Island Ferry Service - the Sun lovingly restored by skipper Rick Stockley is our water transport to and from the island. The Sun was originally planned as a cream boat for the dairy farmers on the Manning River, it was built some time during World War II. For over 40 years it has been plying the waters between Brooklyn, Dangar and Little Wobby.

Enjoy insights into the life of Henry Dangar. Our historian bring to life the days of elegant picnics, swimming and house parties when the Dangar family entertained visitors from the wealthy and influential of Sydney - through its transformation in 1891 to the Marine Hotel designed to provide 'pleasure and retirement for the yachtsman and amateur fisherman' - with all 'the comforts and convenience of the first-class city hub'.

Walk around the island with our local historian to hear about this unique community. We gain insights into how this small community has thrived - from community gardens, to the mullet mail communications and the Dangar Dory Derby Day, a paddling race around the island held every Easter.
