Knife Making Course with Jenna McElvogue

*Knife-making for the absolute beginner*

Understanding recycled steel—how to access, use and transform them into tools.

Jenna McElvogue from @Jennabuilds will be leading this workshop with assistance from Pete Mattila in unraveling the mysteries of the specific properties that recycled steels can offer in knife-making.

In this 2-day workshop participants learn the accessibilities of steels while forging their own knife, understanding the proper function of geometry, hardening and tempering with the shaping and fitting of custom handles that every participant makes.

This is a perfect workshop for anyone looking for that very first step into making. It’s all hands-on learning and everyone walks away with their own custom blade.

It takes place at the picturesque waterfront slip yards of Battery Point in Hobart, Tasmania.

The course will be held in the front shed at Mattila Studio over the weekend of 24th and 25th May 2024, from 8 am to 5 pm each day.

This knifemaking workshop allows only five students per session. This ensures quality in teaching and safe working practice.

Responsibility to teach and share with others in my community and abroad is a part of my arts and trade practice. This fits in with the ethos of self-empowerment through skills. Mattila Studio is a safe space where creativity thrives and ideas are realized.

PLEASE NOTE

Students are to provide their PPE (safety gear) including:

Eye protection
Ear protection
Work boots – steel-toe-capped
Leather gloves
Cotton clothes – nothing synthetic

Please also bring a water bottle with you.

Students must be in a fit working condition. If you have any health-related issues that could inhibit your ability to work, please discuss with Pete before proceeding with the order.
