The need to become a thing in order to break the magic spell of things

Please join us at our Adelaide studio for an evening with world-renowned anthropologist and writer Michael Taussig and highly distinguished artist Simryn Gill that will explore the strange power of objects.

Speakers

Simryn Gill
Simryn Gill is an artist who works in sculpture, photography, drawing and writing. She is known for her collecting, and has produced many works synthesizing ephemera that she has collected. In 2013 she represented Australia at the Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition. Gill divides her time between Sydney, Australia and Port Dickson, Malaysia. Her diverse background has informed and influenced her work, drawing on imagery and resources from her various homes.

Michael T. Taussig
Michael Taussig is a Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University and at The European Graduate School / EGS in Switzerland. Known for his provocative ethnographic studies, he earnt a PhD in anthropology at the London School of Economics. He is widely published in anthropology, especially medical anthropology, but he remains most acclaimed for his commentaries on Karl Marx and Walter Benjamin.
