About this event

‘I wanted to tell a healing story, so I had to go on that healing journey’

Brenda Matthews is a proud Wiradjuri woman, and shares an incredible story in her memoir and documentary, both called ‘The Last Daughter’. Her journey from being taken away – stolen - to becoming an Author, Speaker, Film Director and Indigenous Director of Learning Circle Australia is an inspiring testament to the power of healing and reconciliation.

The Last Daughter delves into a complex and sensitive tale. It asks its audiences to imagine this scenario – what if you had memories of two different families? For Brenda, there are multiple strands of her childhood. She recalls a loving, white family that nurtured and looked after her for half a decade. But she also had her Aboriginal family, one that fought long and hard to have Brenda safely and successfully returned to them. At the centre of this story is the union between these two sides and Brenda’s quest to uncover her past and reconcile these two different worlds.

Brenda wants Australia to heal, and spreading her message in the form of a memoir and film is the first step in the process.

Please join us at the library for a very special event, as Brenda talks about her personal journey, followed by a Q and A session.

The event will include the documentary trailer, however, the film in its entirety will not be screened.

Refreshments, light supper included
