Event description

Description

It is now nearly three months since the British Referendum on its membership of the European Union resulted in a significant margin for the United Kingdom to leave. Dramatic events followed, with the resignation of David Cameron, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and the subsequent election of Theresa May in his place. Considerable uncertainty continues about both the timing of the notification of the United Kingdom’s decision, under Article 50 of the European Treaties, and the broader consequences for Britain.

What are the implications for the European Union? European leaders responded to the referendum result with disappointment and concern. However, they quickly looked to go ahead and agreed to convene a Summit of the European Council, which includes the leaders of all of the other EU Member States, on 16 September 2016. The topic: the Future of the European Union? What will the leaders discuss? What options does the EU have for reform in the current economic and political climate? These questions and others will be discussed at this EU Centre seminar.

The Discussion will be moderated by Bruno Mascitelli, Associate Professor, International Studies, Swinburne University of Technology and President of the Contemporary European Studies Association of Australia (CESAA).
