4A invites senior high school students undertaking visual art to meet with and learn from practising artists EJ SON, Louise Zhang and more.

The First StepAre you thinking about taking your art studies to the next level at university? 4A invites senior high school students undertaking visual art to meet with and learn from practising contemporary artists. In these sessions students can chat to Kalanjay Dhir, Audrey Newton, EJ SON, Chris Yee and Louise Zhang in a one-on-one discussion, covering topics of tertiary education, how to navigate the industry and the first steps to take as an early career artist.Each participant can book a 15-minute time slot between 12 - 2pm with one of the artists on your selected day. This event will take place over two days, see below which artists are participating on each day:Saturday 23 July - Kalanjay Dhir, Audrey Newton and Chris YeeSunday 24 July - EJ SON and Louise ZhangLocation: 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art 181-187 Hay St Haymarket, NSW 2000Artist BiographiesKalanjay Dhir is an artist based in Sydney on Dharug Land who averages 9.5 hours of screen time a day. He has made work about rivers, sci-fi, myth, social media, Mountain Dew, urban development, progress and time. In his spare time he enjoys reading manga and imagining what things would look like if they were built with devotion. Audrey Newton is a Pakistani-Australian artist from Western Sydney. She completed her Masters at Sydney College of the Arts and Bachelors of Fine Arts Honours at Western Sydney University. Audrey has exhibited broadly across Sydney at Firstdraft, Campbelltown Arts Centre, Airspace and Pari and has completed art and writing residencies at Bankstown Arts Centre and in Spain, France and Germany. Her practice interrogates themes of tension through experimental sculpture, installation, and writing. She speculates the agency of materials, processes of artmaking, embodied experiences of art, and the peculiarities and value of physical, metaphysical, and metaphorical spaces. She explores these materials and experiences through lenses of magical realism, dreamscapes, materiality, object-oriented ontology, phenomenology, and spatiality.EJ SON is a Korean Australian multi-functional artist, predominantly working with mixed media sculpture and installation. Son’s recent works uses silicone in attempts to arouse curiosity from the viewers and by rupturing the familiarity, creating space for the new to occur. They make wide range of references from Korean proverbs, personal narrative, gender identity, sex and internet culture. Son graduated first class honours at SCA in 2018, finalist of Emerging 2020 Gosford Regional Gallery, have exhibited at Verge Gallery, Pari, Delmar Gallery and Bus project in Melbourne.Chris Yee is an East Ryde (Sydney) based Artist, working Illustrator, Designer &amp; Animator specialising in traditional “pen and paper” methodologies. He believes in the power of character and storytelling and is heavily drawn to constructing narratives ranging from the humorous to the monstrous and macabre. Inspired by Comics, Wrestling, K-pop, punk and 2000’s rap – it is the Hyperreal and grey area within these genres, the blurring believability between reality and fiction that he finds most engaging. Growing up in 90’s Ryde, amongst the strong communities of Eastwood he is a proud member of the evolving Asian-Australian Creative identity. He strongly believes there is a unique character and original narrative found within this changing community.Louise Zhang 张露茜 is a Chinese-Australian multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture and installation. Zhang explores the dynamics of aesthetics, contrasting the attractive and repulsive in order to navigate the senses of fear, anxiety and a sense of otherness reflecting her identity. Her work is inspired by horror cinema, Chinese mythology and botany, adopting and placing symbols and motifs in compositions of harmonic dissonance.COVID-19 Safety 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art is committed to protecting the health and safety of our audience and staff by minimising the spread of COVID-19.Please note, the The First Step workshops only allow limited numbers of bookings. All participants over the age of 16 in the workshops must have received 2 doses of an authorised COVID-19 vaccine. Parents and guardians accompanying children are encouraged to wear a face mask. Please bring your own mask, otherwise we will supply you with a mask upon entry.
