Event description
The Festival of Open Minds is inspired by a regional community that values shared conversation, ideas, wisdom and those who shine.

About this Event

The Festival of Open Minds is a day of shared conversation, interviews, music, personal reflection, the wisdom of experience, and ideas.

A dynamic program of speakers and performers has been assembled for September14 at the Bega Civic Centre. This TED style event was launched in 2018, and the 350 people who attended left asking for more. In 2019 we take it up a notch.

This year's festival theme is 'People with Oomph!' and the hearts, minds, and souls we have assembled so far fit the bill.

Speakers:

Tim Costello, Chief Advocate, World Vision

Pastor Christie Buckingham, spiritual counsellor to executed Bali 9 drug smuggler Myuran Sukumaran

Nas Campanella, vision impaired Triple J newsreader

Aly Khalifa, innovator and founder of Oceanworks, focused on harvesting plastic waste from our oceans

Emma Booth, para-equestrian competitor, represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics

Alasdair Tremblay-Birchall, comedian, joke writer

Local speakers panel will include Erica Dibden of Tilba Real Dairy, Road Safety Advocate Louise Brand, events entrepreneur Darren Jones, young Indigenous leaders Warren Foster Jnr and Shaquille Aldridge plus on-the-spot interviews with NSW's Harbourmaster, Australia's Ambassador to Sweden.

Our hearts and minds will be uplifted by interactive music and song from Corinne Gibbons and Damon Davies.

This year's Festival will launch at 6pm on Friday night, September 13 with a free community event in the centre of Bega: PARKLIGHT. Along with the Bega Valley Regional Gallery and Bega Valley Library Service, we present a spectacular 'Vivid' style light show and projection event. PARKLIGHT is an evening celebrating our communities, youth and Indigenous culture, the Festival of Open Minds, and the opening of South East Interference III at the Bega Valley Regional Gallery.

The Festival of Open Minds pulls together national and local speakers and ideas with the aim of strengthening and inspiring our communities plus providing an opportunity normally only available to country people via a toll way or airport check in lounge.

The stunning natural landscape of the Bega Valley naturally relaxes and opens minds, the people who will gather to take part in this event add to the promise and power of the day.
