Event description
Learn how to report on sexual assault sensitively, ethically, and legally while protecting yourself from vicarious trauma.

About this event

Reporting on sexual assault presents challenges for even the most experienced journalists; how do you cover a story sensitively, ethically, and legally while protecting yourself from vicarious trauma?

ABC journalist Charlotte King and Nine Publishing editorial counsel Sam White will join moderator and Age journalist Rachael Dexter for an Edit event exploring best practices when reporting on sexual assault.

Charlotte King is a Ballarat-based ABC News reporter. She has reported dozens of stories relating to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and its aftermath for national news and current affairs programs. Her Background Briefing story on regional stillbirths with producer Andy Burns won the 2020 Regional and Rural Journalism Quill and was nominated for a Walkley. Charlotte was also awarded a silver at the 2020 New York Festival Radio Awards for her documentary on the Christian Brothers religious order.

Sam White is Editorial Counsel at Nine Entertainment. Sam predominantly advises Nine Publishing (formerly Fairfax Media) print mastheads, including The Age, on editorial legal risks. He also advises Nine’s television and radio businesses. Before moving to Nine, Sam worked at a top-tier national law firm where he acted for private and public sector organisations and individuals on media related litigation and risk.

The Edit is supported by the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund.
