Acclaimed conceptual artist, writer, curator, editor and thought leader shares the creative process behind her seminal bodies of work

This expansive Mater Class will feature Heide Hatry, a New York City and Berlin based German neo-conceptual artist, curator and editor. Her work, often either body-related or employing animal flesh and organs, has aroused controversy and has been considered horrific, repulsive or sensationalist by some critics, while others have hailed her as an “imaginative provocateur”, “a force of nature…, an artist and a humanist who is making a selfless contribution to life”.

ABOUT THIS MATER CLASSHeide will discuss a range of important themes including, but not limited to:

Perception - power relations, vulnerability, and the whole sphere of reality, beauty and illusion

Exploring violence and gender identity

Life, death and art

The creative process and inventing new ways of confronting reality

Heide grew up on a pig farm in the south of Germany. She left home at the age of 15 to enrol in a sports school. She studied art at various German art schools and art history at the University of Heidelberg. She taught at a private art school for 15 years while simultaneously conducting an international business as an antiquarian bookseller.Since moving to New York in 2003 she has curated numerous exhibitions and has shown her own work at museums and galleries around the world. She has produced about 200 artist’s books and edited more than two dozen books and art catalogues. Her book Skin was published by Kehrer, Heidelberg, in 2005.

Her book Heads and Tales and Not a Rose published by Charta, Milan/New York in 2009 and 2012 and Icons in Ash by Station Hill Press, Barrytown, NY in 2017.

Icons in Ash is a unique creative process developed by Heide to memorialize the dead in art. These human ash portraits propose an intimate and direct means of engaging their memory, and their substance, rather than the fairly detached, abstract, heroic, or clinical approaches that have typified modern western art and funerary practice."Artist Heide Hatry understands the fundamental human desire to have the dead with us always – as image, as memory, as physical remnant. Her portraits made from the ashes of the deceased are haunting modern-day relics, poignant to any viewer, virtually sacred to those who knew and loved the departed. Each is a compelling likeness, a personal shrine."- Richard Vine (art critic, managing editor of Art in America)Heide writes, "In Icons in Ash I want to reintegrate life and death: to touch death, work with death, to be an artist of and for death, to let it speak in its mundanity, its grandeur, its familiarity and its mystery, its uniqueness and its universality, to redeem it from oblivion, to give it its own life again."
