About this event

Lane Cove’s beautiful bushland reserves need some extra help!!

THE CHANGING NATURE of BUSHLAND PARK, an educational stroll with Lynne McLoughlin, author of 'The Natural Environment of Lane Cove' and Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society member guides.

Meet at the Osborne Road entry to Lane Cove Bushland Park. 1 hour guided walks will depart at 30 minute intervals from 10.30 am. Groups are limited to 10 people each.

Learn about the issues facing many of Lane Cove’s reserves. Help call for an urgently needed increase to funding for ALL Lane Cove's bushland reserves in Council’s June ‘Budget’, to enable professional restoration of bush tracks and improved vegetation management.

The rain during the past three years combined with storms, has resulted in tree falls, track wash outs and rampant growth of both native and weed species. Council and volunteer bush regenerators are unable to keep pace with the needs of Lane Cove’s many beautiful reserves. Help call for an urgently needed increase to funding for bushland in Council’s June Budget.

Write a short email before Wednesday 7 June (close of consultation) to encourage Council to increase the funding allocation for reserves. Address your email to: The GM, Lane Cove Council, The Mayor & All Councilors Ref: SU9278 2023/24 Draft Budget, Email: service@lanecove.nsw.gov.au, cc. councillors@lanecove.nsw.gov.au

Issues Evident in Bushland Park:

(1) bracken smothering areas of the endangered hygrocybeae fungal communities;(2) proliferation of palms – not native to the area; (3) smothering by vines such as Cissus and Morinda; (4) track subsidence and tree falls resulting in closure of the Doug Stuart Bushwalk; (5) Sydney Water’s ugly gabion stabilization wall.

History of Lane Cove Bushland Park -

We can enjoy this beautiful bushland today because a group of concerned local residents saved it from destruction in 1971 when the Country Club had plans to extend the golf course into this valley. This group of residents was the genesis of the Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society, now celebrating 52 years of working to preserve the natural bush and wetlands of the Lane Cove area. The Doug Stuart Bushwalk was opened in May 2021 in recognition of Doug’s role in saving this park followed by a lifetime of advocacy to protect the natural environment.

Note: The tracks have some, uneven high steps, tree roots and rough ground which may be slippery if wet. A moderate level of fitness and sure footedness is required to negotiate these tracks.
